Closer draws together a suite of photographs and a three projection DVD that seeks to confuse distinctions between beauty and the grotesque. In the suite of photographic works we see the artist’s eye peering out at us from behind multicoloured masks. In these works, the artist plays off cartoon-style horror—represented by the 99c Halloween masks—against his own body, which has ‘an element of real horror about it’. The work examines what happens when these two forms of ‘horror’ the real and the protean artificial are brought together.
